Government Rebates and Water Conservation

Making Water Storage More Affordable and Sustainable

Installing a rainwater tank is a great investment, but did you know there may be rebates and incentives available to help you do it? Across Tasmania, there are several programs aimed at encouraging sustainable water solutions, especially for rural properties and farms. At Taztanks, we stay up to date with the latest options, so our clients can make the most of what’s available.

Even when there’s no formal rebate, storing your own water can save you real money in the long run, especially if you're reducing mains usage or protecting against drought or supply outages.

Rebates and Support Currently Available

While Tasmania doesn’t have a permanent statewide residential rebate for water tanks, there are several targeted programs worth knowing about. The On-Farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme is one of the most well-known. It offers eligible primary producers up to 25% of the cost back on tanks, pipes, troughs and other infrastructure, up to a maximum of $25,000. This has been particularly helpful for farmers preparing for longer dry periods or improving water access on remote paddocks.

Additional support is sometimes offered through local councils or regional bodies, particularly on King Island or Flinders Island, where supply challenges are more frequent. These may include top-up rebates, development concessions, or waived permit fees if you’re connecting a tank to non-potable systems like toilets or irrigation.

We know that funding programs change regularly, so we keep an eye on what’s new. If you’re planning a project and want to know if you’re eligible for a water-saving rebate, just ask… we’re happy to help. Our admin team can also provide the itemised invoices, site documentation, and photographs you may need to support a claim.

Why Water Conservation Still Matters

Even if rebates aren’t available, water tanks are a long-term win. They give you control over your supply, reduce pressure on public infrastructure, and let you use water more freely and flexibly in your garden or home.

We also work with many households and businesses that want to reduce their environmental impact. By collecting and using rainwater, you’re making a positive shift toward sustainable water solutions, whether that means watering your garden with collected rain, reducing grey water runoff, or simply avoiding unnecessary use of treated mains water.

If you’re interested in taking it a step further, we can recommend or refer you to specialists who can help plumb your rainwater into laundry and toilet systems, or set up greywater recycling alongside your tank.

Helping You Make the Most of It

Installing a water tank shouldn’t be complicated, and getting support to do it shouldn’t be either. That’s why we make sure every quote and invoice is clearly itemised and formatted in a way that works for grant applications. We’re also happy to work with your accountant or funding advisor to make the process as smooth as possible.

If you’re not sure whether you qualify for a water storage rebate, we can help you find out. Even if there’s nothing available right now, we’ll help make sure your tank is installed in a way that future-proofs it for upgrades, plumbing connections, or future incentives.
